Workers Most Susceptible to Time-Off-Work Injuries & Illnesses

Workplace accidents and injuries can happen in any type of job, whether the job requires using a vehicle to deliver merchandise or working with heavy machinery. There are certain occupations, however, in which injuries and illnesses leading to time away from work are the most common. Besides occupation, other factors can also contribute to whether an employee is more likely to receive these types of injuries or illnesses.

In 2011, 20 percent of all workplace injury and illness cases that required days away from work for recuperation involved employees from just five different occupations, according to data released in November by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those occupations included the following:

  • Laborers
  • Nursing aides, orderlies and attendants
  • Janitors and cleaners
  • Drivers of heavy trucks and tractor-trailer trucks
  • Police officers and sheriff’s patrol officers

Officers had a rate of such injuries and illnesses (per 10,000 full-time workers) that was five times higher than for workers in other occupations, while laborers had a rate that was three times higher, according to the data. The data also showed that employees between the ages of 45 and 54 received the highest proportion of work-related injuries and illnesses that required days off of work. They made up 26% of all of all cases in 2011. Specifically in the private sector, employees who only had between one and five years of experience made up 35% of days-away-from-work injury and illness cases.

In the United States, there were 117 cases for every 10,000 full-time employees in 2011 that related to occupational injuries and illnesses that were not fatal and that required days spent away from the workplace. The median number of days spent away from work due to these injuries and illnesses was eight days.
